Blueberries require constant moisture and excellent drainage. Adding plenty of well-rotted compost to clay soil before planting blueberries is a must. Compost-rich soil will hold moisture–but not in the same way clay soil does; compost-rich soil will evenly release moisture to the blueberry’s roots. Blueberries are shallow rooted so to avoid the soil drying out be sure to apply a thick mulch around the base of the plants–this will also keep the soil cool in hot weather.
